:: University Computer Centre

The mission of the University Computer Centre (UCC) is to make its computational power accessible to all of the University Units for the purpose of education, scientific research, collecting and exchanging scientific information, as well as to provide links between the University and the computer systems all over the world.

The UCC supervises the computer network at the University with its central servers (presently there are 11 of them) and coordinates the activities related to providing network access and computer systems at the University. The idea for the University Computer Network came into in 1991 and the start-up process began one year later. Its permanent development and updating is still being carried out. At the moment the number of users exceeds 30000 and it is still growing . in fact all of the University staff and students have access to the network.

The main University Network server is now the Sun V40z . a quad-processor computer being purchased in 2005, serving e-mail accounts for over 3000 AGH UST employees. Servers working on the Solaris and Linux systems are available for students. The University administration staff uses .regent. . a server working on the Linux system. Other servers provide e-mail, e-mail antivirus scanning, the SQL data bases, www proxy and other network services. In the last two years practically all of the UCC equipment and the server room have been renewed and additional students labs were created. Among those, a lab for people with sight disability was also established.

The UCN is based on the Ethernet and Fast Ethernet standards; the network core uses the Gigabit Ethernet. There are over 7000 computers connected to the network, not to mention the private computers. There are 16 modem analogue lines (28kbps) and 30 V.90 (56/64kbps) lines that allow employees and students to gain access to the UCN.

In 2004 the installation of the Wi-Fi 802.11b/g wireless network was begun. The area covered with the Wi-Fi grows constantly; at the moment it is available in 13 buildings including the Main University Library.

Although there are many faculty labs that are better equipped with specialised software, the UCC still remains the place where students spend a lot of time working at the computers during their classes as well as in their time off. They can use over 100 computers gathered in 6 labs, where they can work in the Linux, Windows and Unix systems in both graphic and text modes.

There are also many various professional training courses and classes organised for the AGH UST employees as well as for other individuals.

The important part of UCC mission is maintaining data systems, helping to supervise the University.s work and to provide access to a large amount of information and data about how the University is organised, its rules, events as well as information about the activities of different University units, staff and students. This informative role is realised via university information systems for those bound with the University and, at the same time, for all users of the Internet.
The UCC not only takes an active part in creating the information systems, their maintenance and administering their data, but it also takes care of the hardware and software infrastructure necessary for these systems. The form and organisation of information on University websites is determined and maintained by the University Computer Centre.
