:: Education

In the academic year 2005/2006, the AGH University of Science and Technology educates students at 15 Faculties and the Interfaculty School of Energy, at 20 fields of study and over 100 specialisations. The University offers the following types of courses:

- full-time courses:

  • MSc: in most disciplines held as two-level; this permits a student to complete their education with either an engineer's diploma or to continue to gain an MSc diploma after a 5-year course (and an MA diploma at the Faculty of Applied Mathematics),
  • BA: 3-year courses (only at the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences),
  • MSc: 2-year complementary courses;

- extramural courses:

  • BSc: 4 - 4.5-year courses,
  • BA: 3-year courses (only at the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences and the Faculty of Management),
  • MSc: 2-year complementary courses;

Most Faculties of the University also run Ph.D. (doctoral) programmes and other postgraduate courses.

The ambition of the University is to enable its students to gain knowledge at the highest level, acknowledged all over the world. For this purpose, among others, the following steps have been introduced: intensified learning of foreign languages, integrated studies with a double diploma (of the AGH-UST and a university abroad), a possibility of holding practical training abroad, individual tailoring of syllabuses, and continuous updating of the contents and methodology of the syllabuses (virtual education) as well as learning / teaching and social facilities.

As the execution of these assumptions depends significantly on the level of knowledge of successful candidates for studies, much importance is attached to the promotion of the University and close contacts with secondary schools. Every year, in autumn and spring, during 'Meetings with the University', young people from secondary schools are given an opportunity to visit the University and find out in detail about the Faculties, programmes of studies, examinations and preparatory courses.

While studying, the students can also gain teacher's qualifications. The Team of Pedagogy at the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences run the four-term Teacher Training Academy whose diploma gives graduates full teaching qualifications and entitles them to teach subjects comprised in their student's syllabus.

The Technical Open University has been acting at the AGH University of Science and Technology for 16 years. The series of lectures encompass the most popular areas and are given by outstanding specialists of the University and other Polish educational and scientific centres.
